The Mid-Monsoon September Itinerary (Sept 11–20)

Phase 1: Deep Rainforest Living & The Short Trek

  • Sept 11: Arrive at Calicut, pick up your hired car, and drive up to your rainforest stay in Vythiri/Meppadi. Fall asleep to the heavy sounds of the jungle.
  • Sept 12: Spend the day entirely at the property. Let the kids look for colorful frogs, giant malabar squirrels, and birds with the property's naturalist.
  • Sept 13 (Trek Day): Head out early to the Chembra Heart Lake Trek.
    • Note on Kids: Forest department rules allow children, but the full climb can be steep. The trail starts inside scenic tea gardens (very easy for the 6-year-old) and then enters a shola forest. While your 11-year-old can easily complete the 3.5 km hike to the lake, your 6-year-old might need a few piggyback rides on the steep sections. The reward is a view of a natural, heart-shaped lake surrounded by mist.
  • Sept 14: A slow recovery day. Take the car to Pookode Lake, a natural freshwater lake surrounded by dense evergreen forests. You can rent a pedal boat here, which the kids will enjoy.

Phase 2: Bamboo Forests & Waterfalls

  • Sept 15: Shift your stay to a remote riverside or bamboo plantation cabin in the Kuruva Island or Tholpetty region (Northern Wayanad).
  • Sept 16: Explore Kuruva Island. This is a massive, uninhabited cluster of mangrove islands on the Kabini River. You get onto the island via traditional bamboo rafts. The walking trails are flat, crossing small stream bridges—completely safe and highly engaging for a 6-year-old.
  • Sept 17: Take a morning jeep safari into the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Muthanga. In September, the forest is lush, and you have a high chance of spotting wild elephants, spotted deer, and peacocks right from the safety of the open-top vehicle.

Phase 3: Unwinding in the Wild

  • Sept 18: Visit Soochipara (Sentinel Rock) Waterfalls. It requires a short, slightly rough walk down through tea estates and rocks to reach the viewing area. The sight of water cascading down from the cliffs into the pool below is spectacular in September.
  • Sept 19: Spend your final full day completely disconnected at your stay. Let the family relax by a stream, watch the monsoon mist roll over the hills, and pack up.
  • Sept 20: Drive down the ghat pass back to Calicut for your flight or train home.

Practical Tips for September with Kids

  1. Leeches: Because it is September, the damp forest floors will have leeches. They are completely harmless but can frighten children. Carry a small bottle of saltwater or Dettol spray; spraying it makes them detach instantly. Many nature stays will also provide "leech socks" for walks.
  2. Rain Gear: Expect sudden, heavy rain showers. Pack high-quality ponchos or raincoats for the family, as umbrellas are hard to manage on forest trails.
  3. Footwear: Ensure both kids have sturdy shoes with excellent rubber grip for the Chembra trek, as the wet rocks can be quite slippery.
